Modern Wet Rooms Are The Best Bathroom Life Hack

Modern Wet Room Bathrooms

Modern wet rooms are an idea of making the classic bathroom more wet but providing more space in the process.

If you are renovating to make your bathroom a lot more practical look at what you need exactly.

My big advice to clients is to have a goal for your renovation.

What I mean by a goal is a specific reason to be renovating your bathroom and focus on that.

How this relates to a modern wet room bathroom is the idea of this layout is for clients looking for a big shower, big bath or a larger feeling space.

What is the point of a modern wet room?

Firstly and the most important part of the modern wet room is creating bigger objects in smaller spaces.

Secondly the modern wet room gives you the look and feel of space.

How is this done you might ask? The answer is moving that big bulky shower.

The most common bathroom layout for wet rooms is the classic shower, vanity, and bath set up like the image below.

Moving the shower away from the entrance and often replacing it with the vanity allows for visually a more open room.

See this example below and magically we have a bigger looking/feeling room.

Will Water Go Everywhere In A Wet Room?

Will water go everywhere in a wetroom is one of the most popular questions I get asked.

This I will stress to you is, yes everything in the wet room gets wet but the dry section will not.

Now you are little confused so let me help. There is a dry section and wet section of a wet room layout.

Wet room layouts are often the bath and shower area combined with either a fixed panel or wall to wall (more of that later)

Below is the wet area of the wet room

Often the vanity section is the dry area but it also might contain a toilet in the larger spaces.

This dry section will often stay dry unless your wet body stands out if it.

Everything in the wet room area such as the bath and toilet will get wet, how much it gets wet will depend really on how it is put together by your bathroom renovator and how well they are doing it.

The other big factor is the fall on the floor and how open your shower area is which leads us to the wall-to-wall screen.

Japanese wet rooms are different to modern wet rooms as they are closed-off rooms in the same space.

How Japanese wet rooms work is they have a door leading to the shower and often a deep soaking bath for before you shower.

Modern Japanese wet rooms are becoming more popular in Australia due to the relaxing nature and more warm use.

Reasons To Avoid Having A Modern Wet Room

Importantly you should always understand the pros and cons of any type of renovation or layout you are installing in your home so below I list them for you.

PROS:

  • The wet room will feel so expansive with that frameless glass
  •  Allows for more efficient use of the space which is often more visually appealing
  • Wet rooms can make small bathrooms appear larger and we all know large bathrooms tend to look more luxurious
  • Great for anyone trying to create space in their bathroom

CONS:

  • A wet room design is generally a lot more ‘open plan’ so yes, splashes and steam can go everywhere
  • Waterproofing is a lot more costly and labor-intensive
  • Drainage and tiling of the falls is crucial and something you want to be done by a professional
  • There are some restrictions on where electrical can go i.e. power points / heated towel rails.
  • Wet room renovations are not for  everyone with water often the biggest factor
  • It is not the easiest to tile and you need a lot of experience to complete them

Shower Shelving Ideas For Wet Rooms

Often the most popular shower shelving in bathrooms in the last few years has been the Shower Niche and Shower Wall

Below we will break down the most popular ideas for wet room shelving for your next bathroom renovation.

Undoubtedly the number one shelving for a wet room bathroom is the half wall.

Half walls are exactly as they sound and can be installed in three different ways as I will cover below

WALL TO WALL SHOWER SHELF

As the title suggests the wall-to-wall shelf run from one side of the bathroom to the other. This wet room shelving affects everything in the room including a more costly screen and vanity heights.

Additionally, the variation of this screen is the half-half wall which finishes short of the vanity area.

NIB WALL WITH HALF SHELF

Lastly, we have the nib wall with the half wall which is the most aggressive of all three options but still great for someone who likes storage

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ANY ROOM RENOVATIONS

  • The fall on the floor is crucial to drainage and pooling.
  • Clearly, gradients need to be spot on to ensure the fall is correct and the water is channeled from the shower and you have the ability to drain the entire room effectively.
  • Consider installing wall-hung fixtures (basin /toilet) to add to the spacious feel and free up the floor.
