Tiled drains for bathrooms have been booming in popularity over the last few years but I am here to tell you why you want to avoid them.

Firstly I will give you all the pros about using a tiled bathroom drain which there are many and lastly I will give you the biggest con.

What Is Tiled Insert Bathroom Drain

Commonly known as the Tile Insert drain it’s a larger than a normal size drain that allows for you to cut a floor tile into the drain its self creating a seamless floor.

Below is a classic example of traditional drain with a lot more slits for opening and the modern tiled drain with the drainage around the edge

Most insert drains use a the same drainage sizes as the classic 50mm and 80mm sizes so will go with almost any bathroom sizing.

Pro’s Of Tiled Bathroom Drains

Visually – Most tiled insert drains are stunning. Visually when you see a tiled drain in person you can see and feel the sleekness that often goes so well in modern and classic bathrooms

Hidden – As much as they are stunning they so much more discreet. Hidden drains will over power your bathroom design.

Pattern Floors – Pattern bathroom floors almost always used to be ruined by drains that stood out like a sore thumb.

Tiled drains allows that pattern to continue without being ruined by a hunk of metal looking straight at you.

Sizes – These drains come in all shapes and lengths making them perfect for strip drains or central drains.

Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use Tiled Drains

Drainage – The number one reason you might not want to use tile insert drains is the drainage factor.

Often when clients use square drains you have a lack of flow in the drains if you stand on them.

More open hole drains allow for maximum drainage where tile insert drains only have the edging to drain.

Cleaning – The other downside of the tiled drains is you might not be able to remove them to clean.

Some of these drains can swell over time especially strip drains so you want to make sure you have a quality finish that you can remove for cleaning.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, my pros and cons of tiled drains for your next bathroom.

The tiled drains are perfect for looks and a modern feel where the more holed drains are perfect for higher drainage or a feature.

As tiled drains are hidden they tie in where holed drains are more of stand out finish..

Best Place To Buy Tiled Drains For Bathrooms

The best brand I have worked with when it comes to strip tiled drains is the team at Lauxes Grates.

Lauxes grates are more for your wet rooms or walk in showers and come in long lengths that can be cut down to the perfect.

Another benefit of Lauxes is they are Australia wide.

For your more tradition 50mm and 80mm square or circle drains I can recommend Tile Cloud who have recently got into the space with some lovely brass tiled drains.
