Mate one of the most common questions I get when doing an Australian wet-room renovation is: How small can a wet room be?
What are the minimum space requirements for a wet room, and what’s the smallest layout that still works — functionally.
Below, I’ll break it down in no-nonsense terms. The real-world minimums. The ideal dimensions. And how to make a compact wet room feel like you didn’t sacrifice luxury.

What Is An Australian Wet Room
There’s plenty of confusion around what a “wet room” really means, but for this article we’re talking the classic Australian wet room layout:
Vanity + Walk-In Shower + Bath, all on one wall.

Minimum Wet Room Spacing (All-On-One-Wall Layout)
One of the most space-efficient designs is what I call the “all-on-the-same-wall” wet room—where the vanity, shower and bath are all along one wall. Smart use of space.
To make this layout truly functional, this is your ideal minimum size:
2500 mm long (vanity wall)
1600 mm wide (bath/wall opposite)
Here’s a breakdown of how that space can be divided:
- 750 mm vanity
- 900 mm shower space, with a 50 mm gap between the vanity and the shower
- 800 mm bath width
With this plan you get all elements, they sit well, and the space doesn’t feel like you’re bumping shoulders with the walls. Comfortable. Practical.

Is There a Minimum Size for a Wet Room?
Yes — because remember: The absolute bottom line for a usable Australian wet room that I would do personally is:
2 metres width ( 2000 mm)
At just 2 metres wide, yes, you can squeak a wet room in — but you’ll be compromising on things like bench space, natural moment, and general feel. It might work, but I am really big on you want a bathroom space to feel like it was designed that way from the start not cramped and stuck together.

Minimum Wet Room Dimensions in Australia
Let’s dig into minimums for the parts of the room:
Minimum vanity width: 450 mm
Really the smallest working vanity you can get. They are a powder room style sink
Bath Width Is 700mm
On the smallest side of bath but if done in a freestanding size it can be at least deep
Shower Width Is 800mm
Being just bigger then a shower over bath it still feels like a huge shower space due to no return wall and open shower design.

Final Recap – Jim’s Wet Room Minimum Dimensions Recommendation
To sum it all up:
✔ 2500 mm wide (vanity wall)
✔ 1600 mm deep (bath wall)
That’s your practical “small but still good” size. Can you go smaller? Maybe, but you’ll be compromising bench space, shower size or both.
If you want my best piece of advice when it comes to smaller wet rooms. Mark out on the spacing of the room in another room and see how it feels, stand in the “fake” shower or stand in front of the new vanity size and see if you think it is something you can live with .
