Perth water is hardly gentle either on our fittings or our skin. Between the limescale build-up on tapware, the chlorine smell out of the shower, and the white crust that seems to appear on every kettle and glass shower screen in WA — it’s no wonder “whole house water filtration Perth” is one of the most searched terms by homeowners trying to fix it at the source, rather than just scrubbing it off every weekend and I was one of those people googling it every night .
This whole home water filtration system mindfield is quite personal for me, as it’s been a journey of misunderstanding, hard sales tactics and unrealistic expectations.

I’ve spent over 20 years in bathroom renovations across Perth, and I’ve lost count of the number of tapware sets, shower screens and appliances I’ve seen chewed up early by our hard water. My wife also brought to me another issue we were having with our kids. They were getting super dry, itchy skin after every bath, every night there was so match scratching so the issue became frequently more important and personal to get sorted as quick as I could.
What I Installed
I went with a Whole House Triple Water Filter System, which I bought myself after days of working out what I needed and what I was being ripped off for. It would be on the lower end of cost for what these systems go for as I just didnt understand at the time where the value is.
Perth’s mains water sits around 200+ mg/L hardness, which is considered “very hard” by most drinking water guidelines so most Perth suburbs are going to have water that can smell a little funny, tastes a little funny and causes a fair amount of damage on my shower screen glass. Each suburb changes on hardness depending on a bunch of factors.
Triple filtration means the water passes through three stages before it hits any tap in the house typically sediment, then a carbon or limescale-reducing stage for me but that third one you can change to suit your needs.
You will see separate, more expensive systems with water softeners. They are amazing products that really go all out in making that water soft, which means taking rough, hard water (bull in a china shop) to water that does no damage, making it soft and the best it can possibly be at the end for hair, cleaning etc.

The Honest Review: One Year In
Here is my honest review one year on.
- No issues. No leaks, no drop in water pressure, no cartridge failures, nothing to report on the “problems” side of the ledger. (We did just change the filters at the one-year mark as recommended)
- Noticeably less limescale build-up on tapware and the shower screen compared to before — the kind of thing you notice a few weeks in, not overnight. If you hate cleaning as I do, this was a huge one, as my glass is so porous.
- Installation was straightforward beyond my and my wife trying to work out where to put the unit in the garden (We live on a corner block so didnt want it standing out too much)
- Stainless housing has held up well — no rust, no discolouration, still looks like day one. (I did go budget on the cover so don’t judge me; the cost of living is getting out of hand)
I’ll keep updating this post at the 2 year mark, particularly once it’s time for the first filter change, since that’s where a lot of “cheap” systems start costing you more than they saved.
What It Actually Costs
This is the part most reviews gloss over, so here’s the real breakdown:
- Unit price: $1750
- Installation (licensed plumber): $1200
- Ongoing filter changes: $120 (Set Of Three), typically every 6–12 months depending on usage and water quality
For context, based on current Perth pricing, whole-house filtration systems generally range from around $1000 – $1750 for a basic single- or dual-stage setup (Supply and install) up to $6,000+ for multi-stage systems with UV or reverse osmosis, installed. A straightforward triple-stage system like mine — supplied and professionally installed — typically lands in the $2600–$3500 range once you factor in the plumber’s time, fittings, and the unit itself. Ongoing filter cartridges usually run $100–$300 a year, depending on the stages and how hard your particular pocket of Perth’s water is.
It’s not a cheap weekend job, but compared to replacing tapware, hot water systems and appliances every few years because they’re fighting hard water the whole time, it’s one of the better long-term investments you can make in a Perth home.
Is It Worth It for a Perth Home?
Is It worth? is something I went back and forth on it for a long time and mate below are the things I would consider getting it for
- Limescale on taps, shower screens or glassware that keeps coming back no matter how often you clean it
- A chlorine smell or taste straight from the tap
- Appliances (our dishwasher was being weird for ages so we put it down to that which has seemed to help)
- Worried about the family’s skin irritation; it’s something worth trying
- You’re already spending money on jug filters or bottled water because you don’t trust what’s coming out of the tap
If none of that applies and your only concern is drinking water taste, an under-sink filter is a cheaper starting point. But if you want every tap and appliance in the house protected, whole house is the only setup that actually does that.
